La comunidad clim\u00e1tica apunta a la captura de carbono como uno de las formas m\u00e1s eficaces para reducir las emisiones de CO2 de la atmosfera y combatir el cambio clim\u00e1tico<\/strong>. Existen mecanismos de captura artificiales como, por ejemplo, extractores de CO2 atmosf\u00e9rico, fibras textiles hechas con algas, hojas artificiales que hacen la fotos\u00edntesis, etc., que pueden ayudarnos a reducir la cantidad de CO2 en la atmosfera.<\/p>\n

Pero tambi\u00e9n hay mecanismos presentes en la naturaleza o en el mismo ciclo biol\u00f3gico de la Tierra<\/strong>, que siempre nos han ayudado a controlar el nivel de CO2 en la atmosfera. Un ejemplo de estos mecanismos es la fotos\u00edntesis, un procedimiento vital que hace que, durante el d\u00eda, las plantas capturen di\u00f3xido de carbono de la atm\u00f3sfera y expulsen ox\u00edgeno.<\/p>\n

Las hojas de las\u00a0plantas\u00a0contienen en su superficie, en la parte inferior, diminutos poros por los que respiran, absorbiendo di\u00f3xido de carbono (CO2) de la atm\u00f3sfera y liberando ox\u00edgeno y vapor de agua.<\/p>\n

Gracias a esta capacidad de captura, aquellos ecosistemas que re\u00fanen una gran cantidad de plantas y vegetaci\u00f3n como los bosques, la selva y la tundra, son considerados como sumideros de carbono naturales del Planeta<\/strong>. Del mismo modo que lo son los oc\u00e9anos.<\/p>\n

Los\u00a0oc\u00e9anos\u00a0absorben aproximadamente el 30% de las emisiones globales de di\u00f3xido de carbono <\/strong>y el 80% del calor generado por el creciente aumento de los gases efecto invernadero, atenuando de esta forma muchos de los impactos nocivos de la contaminaci\u00f3n atmosf\u00e9rica.<\/p>\n

Y es que un grupo de cient\u00edficos de la Universidad Tecnol\u00f3gica de Sydney (UTS)<\/strong> ha descubierto en las profundidades del oc\u00e9ano, un microbio marino que captura carbono. Se trata de un depredador microsc\u00f3pico que podr\u00eda convertirse en un arma biol\u00f3gica contra el cambio clim\u00e1tico. <\/strong><\/p>\n

La autora principal del estudio, la profesora Martina Doblin<\/strong>, ha se\u00f1alado que \u201ceste hallazgo aporta pistas sobre c\u00f3mo el oc\u00e9ano equilibra el di\u00f3xido de carbono en la atm\u00f3sfera\u201d. Y es que el Prorocentrum cf. Balticum, tiene el potencial de capturar carbono de forma natural, incluso aunque los oc\u00e9anos se calienten y se vuelvan m\u00e1s \u00e1cidos.<\/p>\n

Este microbio es un organismo eucariota<\/strong>, por lo que tiene un n\u00facleo y unos org\u00e1nulos distintos dentro de sus c\u00e9lulas. De todos modos, este organismo no est\u00e1 clasificado como un animal, una planta o un hongo. Este organismo unicelular suele ser muy com\u00fan en los oc\u00e9anos. Sin embargo, la comunidad cient\u00edfica a\u00fan no dispone de suficiente informaci\u00f3n sobre cu\u00e1l es su papel en este ecosistema.<\/p>\n

Lo que si sabe es que el Prorocentrum cf. Balticum<\/strong> es un mix\u00f3trofo y por ello puede hacer la fotos\u00edntesis como una planta y tambi\u00e9n alimentarse de otros organismos como un animal.<\/p>\n

Por lo tanto, los Prorocentrum cf. Balticum pueden subsistir al incremento de las temperaturas y a la acidificaci\u00f3n de los oc\u00e9anos, dos fen\u00f3menos causados por el cambio clim\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n
